BRISTOL — Back in 2016, the Bristol Development Authority announced a grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development that will enable Bristol to clean up the property across the street from ESPN at 894 Middle Street.
The $1.3 million grant will focus on removing PCBs and other contaminants from the 17-acre, Bristol owned property.
The grant enabled the installation of a proposed fuel cell on the rear portion of the site, enabling commercial/mixed-use development on the street frontage.
Since then, the property has remained untouched.
“We cannot work in the area while the box turtles are hibernating, and the peregrine falcons are mating. That means the only time work can be done is between July and October,
unless we can get a wildlife biologist (or herpetologist) to attest that there are no box turtles hibernating in the project area. We’ll keep you posted on how that goes.” noted the BDA.
Box turtles are popular pets, both within their native range and abroad. They need exposure to real sun or proper artificial light to stay healthy. It is also important to provide them with a suitable diet. In the wild, box turtles are omnivores that will eat a lot of different things.
Their main food source is invertebrates, such as insects and worms, but they also eat a lot of vegetable matter, including leaves, fruits and berries. It is important to give them an equally varied diet in captivity to ensure proper nutrition.
They make popular pets because they are relatively docile but still somewhat exotic looking. Some of the species/subspecies come in brilliant colors and designs. Most box turtles are safe to pick up and will not bite humans, but you should still not pick them up too often or tempt fate by brushing your finger at their snout.
Powerful and fast-flying, the Peregrine Falcon hunts medium-sized birds, dropping down on them from high above in a spectacular stoop. They were virtually eradicated from eastern North America by pesticide poisoning in the middle 20th century.
After significant recovery efforts, Peregrine Falcons have made an incredible rebound and are now regularly seen in many large cities and coastal areas.
Time will tell during this waiting period.
