Stricter regulations for restaurants and other businesses in Bristol and Burlington that prepare food on site are now in place.

The FDA has released an updated version of the federal food code with “significant changes” that include food service workers and revised cooking temperatures.

The 100 point restaurant inspection scoring system is no more.

The Bristol Burlington Health Department stated: The Connecticut General Assembly passed a bill that will make the FDA model food code Connecticut’s food code.

This new law will result in a variety of changes for the food establishments in Connecticut and the local health departments that regulate them.

Officials from the Food and Drug Administration described the new national code as a model regulation that provides all levels of government and the private sector with practical, science-based guidance and manageable provisions for reducing the known risks of foodborne illness.

The Bristol Burlington Health Department will now have to comply with state statute and stop using the codes readily accessible to the public for decades.

Charles I. Motes Director with The Bristol Burlington Health Department said: With the new code in place, we are not able to publically offer the monthly spreadsheet with results online.”

Before the new code, the public was able to view the monthly inspection results online which were published by local media outlets.

Motes displayed frustration because of the new system. The new code essentially ties the department’s hands until the kinks are fixed. Motes also said the department is currently down one inspector.

Motes additionally said to contact the state for more details and scoring information.

A spokesperson for The Connecticut Department of Public Health food division verified the new code is in effect however they do not have the ability to offer any restaurant inspection data.

The state said new scoring results can still be obtained by any local Health Department.

Motes said at the moment the public can only visit in-person about specific establishment reports.

The new FDA food code provisions are designed to be consistent with federal food laws and regulations.
