The Committee on Public Health will hold a public hearing on H.B. 5416, a bill aimed at limiting the deceptive advertising practices of fake women’s health centers, often known as crisis pregnancy centers, here in our state. NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut has been leading the fight against the deceptive practices of these centers and will be taking action today to share the concerns of its members with the committee.
“Anyone seeking time-sensitive medical care should be able to access the information they need in order to find that care without risk of deception or shame,” said Sarah Croucher, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut, “We have documented the ways fake women’s health centers in Connecticut use deceptive advertising to steer pregnant individuals away from accessing the care that they need. No matter where you stand on pro-choice issues, I think we can all agree that organizations offering medical care should be honest about the services they provide. I am pleased that the Committee on Public Health is taking up this important issue. Residents of our state deserve transparency and honesty in reproductive healthcare.”
“As fake clinics proliferate across the country, we’re gratified that city councils and state legislatures are embracing the need to improve access to reproductive health care in our communities by taking the necessary, bold action to curb the dangers posed by fake clinics,” said Andrea Miller, President of the National Institute for Reproductive Health. “With HB 5415, Connecticut is recognizing the women who are pregnant, or think they might be, need and deserve timely access to qualified medical professionals, not lies and deception. On this point, we can all agree.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut has released an updated and detailed report on the tactics used by these fake women’s health centers, and the threats they pose to individuals in our state. This report, entitled, “Crisis Pregnancy Centers: A Threat to Reproductive Freedom,” can be accessed through the following direct link: http://bit.ly/2FM6tfK.
The legislative arm of NARAL works to pass pro-choice legislation and defend against anti-choice legislation at the State Capitol, believing strongly that all women have the right to access the full range of reproductive choices including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
