Pro-Choice Connecticut Applauds Malloy’s Budget Veto

The Republican budget passed by the Connecticut House and Senate earlier this month was damaging for reproductive healthcare. We applaud the decision by Governor Malloy to veto the budget today.

Throughout this year, we have witnessed attempts to roll back healthcare coverage at the federal level. Although the latest attempt failed, we know that Republicans in the Senate and House will continue to try and find ways to prevent the receipt of Medicaid reimbursements by Planned Parenthood and to reduce access to reproductive healthcare in general.

The budget proposed by Republicans failed to include language that would have protected reimbursements to Planned Parenthood at the state level, should access be revoked by the federal government.

By contrast, the budget proposed by Democrats would have protected payments to Planned Parenthood, ensuring that the 30,000 Connecticut Medicaid patients who access their services could still receive care. Both Democrat and Republican budgets included cuts to Husky A eligibility, with further damaging cost-sharing requirements for low-income households in the Republican budget.

As state lawmakers continue to work on finding a solution to our budget impasse, we urge them to craft a budget that protects reproductive healthcare in Connecticut.

Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut, Sarah Croucher, said, “We cannot afford to go backward when it comes to women’s health. If our state economy is to grow, we must ensure that women have straightforward and affordable access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. Cutting off access to Medicaid reimbursements for Planned Parenthood would cause a public health crisis in our state, and we urge Connecticut legislators to protect access to care for all.

The legislative arm of NARAL works to pass pro-choice legislation and defend against anti-choice legislation at the State Capitol, believing strongly that all women have the right to access the full range of reproductive choices including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
